Laser Gum Lift And Contouring

What is a "gummy smile?"

When there is an overgrowth of gum tissue and it starts to cover a larger portion of the teeth, the smile appearance can become too “gummy” and the teeth appear smaller. This often happens as a result of poor hygiene while wearing braces, because of hormone changes, or as a side effect of medication. Your smile is made up of more than just teeth. All the aspects of a smile should be in balance and harmony for the smile to be at its best.

A gum lift or gum contouring procedure involves gently removing this excess gum tissue by contouring and shaping the “gummy” section of your smile. Using a gentle diode laser, the gums are sculpted to remove excess gum and reshape the smile. Sometimes it is used to even out gum levels of each tooth for better symmetry and balance of the overall smile. This procedure is also very often used in combination with a smile makeover using porcelain veneers. It is non-invasive, requires little to no down time, and can even be performed without anesthetic in many cases.

Botox for gummy smiles

Since Botox is a muscle relaxant, it is an excellent choice to help reduce gummy smiles. Only a few units of Botox is needed to relax the strong activity of the smile muscles to achieve a softer, less gummy display of the smile. Botox in this area typically lasts 4-6 months.
